SHIMLA: While the French government has already shown its keenness to introduce Rapid Transport System in Himachal Pradesh, the state urban development department is now gearing up to introduce trams in Shimla, Dharamshala and Una. Based on the success of trams in these three townships, a similar initiative would be undertaken in other parts of the hill state.
Confirming the development, urban development minister Sudhir Sharma said that initially the plan was to introduce trams in Shimla and Dharamshala, but now Una, too, has been selected for the project. “Projects would be completed on public private partnership basis and help in decongesting the traffic by providing alternate mode of transportation,” said the minister. A meeting has already been held with the French minister.
According to the plan, in Shimla, the trams would run between Chhota Shimla and Boileuganj, Summerhill and Totu and Sanjauli and the Mall Road. Sources said, the introduction of light rail transit system would enhance traffic movement at the rate of 15 to 20 km per hour. Routes are also being identified for trams in Una and Dharamshala.
